Abstract:
Bian Que (扁鵲, 407 – 310 BC), the “Founder of Chinese Medicine” was a contemporary of Hippocrates (460 – 370 BC) in ancient Greece, the “Father of (Western) Medicine”. Their views and methods of practising medicine were remarkably similar. Their contributions represented a breakthrough in the history of medicine at that time, in the East and in the West. My travels in May 2023 to Hippocrates’ native island of Kos inspired me to make this journey in China in May 2024, in search of Bian Que and the origins of Chinese Medicine.

Sun Simiao (孫思邈, 581 – 682 AD), the “King of Medicine (Yaowang)”, physician and writer of the Sui-Tang dynasty, is the second TCM doctor we were interested in. Because of his teachings on medical ethics, he is sometimes called the “Hippocrates of China”.

Looking up their hometowns and existing temples commemorating them, we travelled across four provinces of China. Starting from Xi’an to Xingtai and Yuncheng, we crossed the Yellow River and the Taihang Mountains. Following their footsteps, we passed through the areas of the origins of Chinese civilization. This unusual trip brought us deep to the countryside, where these two ancient masters and Chinese medicine are still very much alive in the hearts of the people.
