Abstract:
Join us for a light-hearted and informal conversation with Honorary Associate Consultant Ophthalmologist, Professor Andrew Kuk, junior doctor Dr Daniel Yim, and HKU lecturer and Family Medicine doctor, Dr Nicolette Ray as we delve into the multifaceted experiences of living, studying and working in medicine across the UK and Hong Kong. Drawing on our journeys as students, junior and senior doctors, we will explore ‘the good, the bad, and the ugly’ of our medical training and professional lives. Whether you are considering the UK for an elective, your EY year or contemplating a more permanent move, don’t miss this opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and triumphs of working in these culturally diverse healthcare systems.

Speaker Bios:
Professor Andrew Kuk
Professor Andrew Kuk joined the Department of Ophthalmology as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Practice in June 2024. He was born and raised in the United Kingdom (UK), attended Harrow School as an academic and music scholar and studied medicine (MBBS, 2011) at Imperial College London intercalating at the Imperial College Business School (Healthcare Management BSc, 2009).
Professor Kuk completed his Foundation Year Programme in the National Health Service and started his ophthalmology career at Aintree University Hospital (Liverpool UK, 2013). During this time, he passed the Licensing Examination (Hong Kong (HK)) and subsequently returned to HK to fulfil his internship and continued his ophthalmology training in the Hospital Authority – HK East Cluster at Tung Wah Eastern Hospital and Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital.
Upon obtaining the Fellowship of the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong (2022) Professor Kuk became team head of the oculoplastic and orbital surgery department. Now as a part of the University of Hong Kong he will continue to lead in this area of expertise whilst engaging with the student population to which he previously served as an Honorary Clinical Assistant Professor at the HKU Medical Ethics and Humanities Unit.
As a clinical teacher, Professor Kuk has been a trainer at the Nethersole Clinical Simulation Training Centre for crew resource management training, departmental resuscitation training and intern boot camp training. And he is an active course instructor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong Ophthalmic Microsurgical Training Centre.
Dr Daniel Yim
Dr Daniel Yim is a UK-trained physician with clinical experience in the NHS and in HA. He completed his MBBS at St George’s University of London (2021) and Foundation Year training at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. After passing the Licensing Examination in Hong Kong, he served as an Honorary Clinical Practitioner in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Queen Mary Hospital, University of Hong Kong (2024).
Daniel has a long-standing passion for medical education and has engaged as a committed clinical educator by designing and leading various Academy of Medical Educators (AOME) courses at the University of Nottingham and previously delivered O&G workshops for final-year medical students at Queen Mary Hospital.
He has recently participated in a few sessions organized by the Medical Ethics and Humanities Unit (MEHU), including narrative film and poster workshops, demonstrating his interest in bridging clinical care and humanistic medicine through reflective practice and cultural storytelling.
Dr Nicolette Ray
Dr Nicolette Ray completed her Family Medicine training at King’s College, London, and has since practiced in both the NHS and private sectors in London. In 2010, she relocated to Hong Kong, where she has spent a significant portion of the past 12 years teaching at HKUMed. She currently holds a joint appointment as lecturer in the Medical Ethics and Humanities Unit and the Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care.
