Abstract:
Dr Ben Ng is an emergency medicine and anaesthesiology specialist whose humanitarian work has taken him to Ethiopia, South Sudan, Gaza and Sudan. A recipient of a Distinguished Medical Award for Humanitarian Service, he will share experiences from his work with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), reflect on the challenges of providing care in these settings, and discuss how medical students can get involved in this vital work.

Speaker:
Dr Ben Ng is a specialist in both Emergency Medicine and Anaesthesiology.

His humanitarian journey began with MSF, where he volunteered in some of the most volatile regions on the planet. In 2006, he worked in Ethiopia’s Somali region, providing emergency medical services amid famine and armed conflict, often under life-threatening conditions. In 2009, he responded to Sri Lanka’s post-civil war crisis, caring for displaced civilians and trauma victims. In 2019, he volunteered in Madagascar as an anesthesiologist, performing life-saving surgeries for children with cleft lips and palates in underserved rural communities.

In 2024, Dr Ng left his role at the Hospital Authority to rejoin MSF, serving as the sole anaesthetist at a regional hospital in Aweil, South Sudan. In 2025, his mission to Gaza before the ceasefire showcased his extraordinary courage and dedication to the most perilous crises. The ongoing conflict made Gaza one of the most dangerous environments for medical workers—constant bombings, sniper fire, and unpredictable violence threatened everyone. This year 2026, he worked as a field anaesthetist in Tawila which is very close to El Fasher, a city in Sudan where genocide was suspected occurred recently.

Currently, he works as private anaesthetist & emergency physician with a wide spectrum of medical works. He is going to continue humanitarian work in future.
