MH Conversations and Connections Series: “The Spirit of Volunteerism –  Humanising Healthcare for the New Generation”

How can healthcare workers and student volunteers contribute in humanitarian emergencies? This panel discussion features three field workers sharing inspirational stories in medicine, public health, and communication related to humanitarian crisis and response. Come broaden your mind and join us for a conversation with tips on becoming a humanitarian aid worker!

Speakers:

Dr Nason Tan (MBBS, MPH)
Senior Lecturer, School of Public Health, HKUMed

Nason has done humanitarian missions in Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Nepal, Cambodia, Borneo, and Malaysia. He was also involved in the COVID-19 response in Hong Kong and had managed outbreaks of Cholera, Lassa fever, severe Malaria and malnutrition emergencies. He has also done exploratory mission in Borneo, and coordinated a search and rescue effort for the Rohingya refugees in the 2015 Andaman Sea crisis which led to the founding of South East Asia Refugees Support Network.

Ms Baikong Mamid
Tutor and coordinator of the Master of Public Health Practicum Programme at the School of Public Health, HKUMed.

Before joining the Faculty of Medicine, she worked in various positions, from coordinator to management roles, in the field and the office headquarters of international non-government organizations Medecins Sans Frontieres and Oxfam Great Britain. Her experience as a humanitarian and health communications professional expands from Southeast Asia and Greater China to countries like Afghanistan, South Sudan, and South Africa.

Physician, Department of Medicine and Geriatrics, Princess Margaret Hospital.

Volunteer medical doctor at Humanitarian Service Point at Mediterranean Sea, 2022; Emergency Response Unit with Canadian Red Cross in Nepal 2015.
