The story follows an MBBS student from Hong Kong University who becomes a surgeon working in a challenging war environment and it includes themes that will resonate closely with many in our Faculty. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Dr Anderson Tsang (Neurosurgeon, HKUMed) and will feature the film’s director Mr Dominic Cheung (Chung Ying Theatre) and HKUMed’s own graduates: paediatric rheumatologist Dr Kai Ning Cheong (MBBS 2010), and midwife Ms Tobey Lee (BNurs 2008) who both served in Médecins Sans Frontières. We hope you will join us for this special event.
About the film:
Alive in the Mortuary (留守太平間)
What everyone wishes is fantasy; a path full of brambles along is aspiration Life is short yet aspiration is great. Once we realize that life is counting down minute by minute, even full of unpredictable unknowns, then we should do whatever we want in our lifetime, or do our best to pursue what we want, even if we know that the road to achieve it is difficult. A high-earning surgeon joins a voluntary rescue service in a remote war zone. The hospital is under attack and his colleagues hid him in the morgue to keep him safe. In the room, he met a young engineer who was also hiding in safety. They didn’t know each other and both had troubles before coming to the war zone. As they stay together in the closed space, an argument ensues amidst chaos and confusion in life. Along the course of their discussion, they suddenly discover that when people face difficulties and setbacks in life, one easily gives up on his dreams. Most give up at the beginning but only a few are fortunate enough to power through and succeed.
In 2021, the Chung Ying Theatre Company, with a new production team, will perform this mustsee-once-in-life by renowned playwright Chong Mui Ngam. This performance features Peter Poon’s comeback performance to Hong Kong theatre, a Best Actor (Tragedy/Drama) awardee of the 1st Hong Kong Drama Awards. Everyone’s life is a countdown. Let us go together along with our audience and regain our young and original dreams.
