MEHU 10th Anniversary Celebration – L.C. Chan Memorial Lecture in Medical Humanities

Title: “Traditions, Trojan Horses and the Medical Humanities: A Tribute to Professor LC Chan.”

Speaker

Professor Shaun Ewen
Deputy Vice Chancellor (Education), Griffith University

Abstract:
Fifteen years after his seminal review of medical education in 1910, Flexner lamented the lack of culture in medicine. More recently, the history of the development and evolution of Medical Humanities is both western/anglo, and individualistic, in its framing and delivery. This paper highlights the benefits of a place-based approach to medical humanities, drawing upon examples in Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand, and the potential of medical humanities to contribute to a social accountability agenda. Implications for teaching the history of medicine, in particular the COVID-19 pandemic, will be canvassed. Finally, might Artificial Intelligence challenge some of our traditions in the medical humanities, in how we teach, and what we teach?
