Abstract:
Kos distinguishes itself from the other beautiful Greek islands through its association with Hippocrates, the “father of Western medicine”. The Asclepieion of Kos is the sanctuary of Asclepius, the God of healing, where he worked and taught in the 5th century BC.

With his detailed recordings of astute clinical observations, and by introducing the concept of “prognosis”, Hippocrates laid the rational basis for Western medicine. His contemporary in China is Bian Que, known as the “founder of Chinese medicine”. There are similarities between the clinical practice of the two ancient masters.

The Hippocratic Oath is a code of medical ethics and symbol of an ideal associated with his name.
