Abstract:
The topic of art may evoke philosophical responses, but art is also all around us, appearing in many forms. Importantly, artistic expressions need not be beautiful; the naked truth is better than beautiful lies. We need art because it expresses what words cannot and dare not say, especially when it concerns topics at the heart of medicine. Exploring favorite works of art and music, the speaker will show that art exists not in a vacuum but reflects the artist’s life and times. Creating and appreciating art involves acts of reinterpreting human experience, thus leading to more perspectives and deeper insights. We hope you will join us for this multimedia lunchtime presentation.

Speaker:
Professor Bernard M Y Cheung
Biotechnology Director of the Innovation and Technology Commission
