MH Conversations and Connections Series – Lunchtime Seminar
Title: “Virtuous Medicine: Practical Compassion and Forgiveness in Medical Error”
This talk will engage Nancy Berlinger’s work on the ethics of forgiveness after medical error. We will discuss the role of emotion in these situations and in a theory of forgiveness generally. It will be suggested that the distinction between cognitive and affective forms of empathy is helpful in the context of the doctor-patient relationship, and that the former may be essential to forgiveness while it may be that the latter is not. Come join philosopher Dr Carl Hildebrand and clinician Dr Siddharth Sridhar in a deep conversation about emotion and medical error.
